Certified Unbreakable Screen
Urban Laboratories, UL, The official testing company for Occupational Safety and Health Administration in the U.S has certified the new Samsung display as unbreakable. The display is covered by a plastic window which could be used when Samsung launches their rumor to be foldable phone. The possible downside for using plastic on a phone is it will be highly prone to scratches. It wouldn’t be the first time plastic has been used in a smartphone as we saw with the Motorola Droid Turbo 2.
In order for the new panel to be certified it had to pass various UL’s military-standard tests. Tests that consist of 26 consecutive drops from about 4 feet high. An extreme temperature tests of 159.8 degrees Fahrenheit and -25.6 degrees Fahrenheit. The unbreakable display was able to pass all tests which left no damage to the Samsung flexible OLED panel.
“The fortified plastic window is especially suitable for portable electronic devices not only because of its unbreakable characteristics, but also because of its lightweight, transmissivity and hardness, which are all very similar to glass,” said Hojung Kim, general manager of the Communication Team for Samsung Display Company.
Samsung is looking beyond smartphone’s with unbreakable screens as they look at implanting the unbreakable screen on portable game consoles and mobile military devices. Still with all that excitement of owning a Samsung phone with an unbreakable screen, there is no official word when a smartphone yet alone any device will feature the unbreakable screen.
