Today marks the birthday of a true queen
Afeni Shakur, Tupac’s mother, she would have been 71.
Born Alice Faye Williams, she later changed her name to Afeni when she joined the Black Panthers, a revolutionary organization. The name Afeni means ‘Lover of the people’. She was a very active member of the Black Panthers, even being one of the Panther 21, or NY21, a group of twenty one Black Panther members who were arrested and accused of planning to blow up New York department stores and police stations. Afeni was put on trial, facing life behind bars, she chose to be her own legal representative, using all her fight, against all odds Afeni successfully won her freedom.
She was an inspiration to many people for her strong will and wisdom. Tupac dedicated one of his songs, Dear Mama, off the album ‘Me Against the World’ to his Black queen where he praises his mother’s courage.
“Remember the words of my son. Remember to keep your head up, remember against all odds nobody can judge you, that’s God’s job. Remember the things 2Pac said, I just really ask people to really study his music and to listen to his music with an open heart and soothed mind, Peace” Afeni Shakur
Happy 71st Birthday Afeni, you’re loved and missed.
